The laws of electricity and magnetism play a central role in the operation of various devices such as radios, televisions, electric motors, computers, and a host of electronic devices used in medicine. Scientists' contributions to the field of electromagnetism were especially significant because the laws they formulated are basic to all forms of electromagnetic phenomena, including emission and reception of electromagnetic waves. To understand how radio and television work, we must understand the origin and nature of electromagnetic waves and how they propagate through space.
